Everything that was drawn on the chalkboard during the play was animated from drawings the actors created, and then mimed as they were played on the screen during the show:
Footage shot on green screen, superimposed on photo of a model of the outside of the school, which also appeared on the chalkboard during the show:
Short scene "in the hallway" prerecorded and played on the screen:
Software Used: After Effects, Photoshop
Mini "office" sets offstage, with actors projected onto chalkboard/screen live:
Achieved with a Camcorder, QLab 3, and various video adapters (see system diagram below)
Routing through the computer created a .25 second delay, which required some adjustments
Sound Involved in Video Above:
Created for a number of instances of a classroom orchestra involving otherworldly Seuss-esque instruments. Most bars are loopable, making it possible to cue different sections separately and run the music for as long as necessary. Created in Garageband using entirely found sounds, such as a cow mooing, pickles being sloshed around in a jar, gurgle sounds of water draining, a note on an ocarina, a note on a bass clarinet, and sounds of flutes and trumpets.
Used as a signal that the live video "intercom system" in the school was turning on or off. Created using a software instrument in Garageband.
Used (on repeat with increasing volume) for an ominous sound that terrifies the kids that turns out to be a shopping cart being dragged up the stairs. Created by recording a shopping cart on part of the set.
One of many evil laugh sounds used (coming from different places all over the stage) for a scene where the good teacher gets possessed by the evil teacher. Created by recording the evil teacher actor's voice and adding reverb.
Used along with a huge crack of thunder as the evil teacher accidentally turns herself into an apple. Created by recording the actor's voice, stretching out the sound, and layering with a pitch-bent version.
Used to introduce the most terrifying character in the show, Mrs. Zarves (who is the one in pink who appears on the screen in an instance of live video above), as the sound of something supernatural sucking the kids into a classroom that doesn't exist. Occurs at the end of the hallway scene that takes place on the screen (in a pre-recorded video also seen above). Created by combining a number of found sounds.
One of approximately 15 different dramatic thunder sounds found and used for the show. This one is used when the terrifying Mrs. Zarves reappears (and she is angry).
The sound of a tornado hitting the school. Created by combining two found sounds.
